Dr. Christopher Barrick, Associate Professor of Music at West Liberty University, serves as Chair of the Department of Music and Theater where he teaches saxophone and jazz.
A versatile musician and educator, Barrick performs and teaches all styles of music including classical, jazz, and rock. He has given solo performances at numerous professional conferences including those of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the United States Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium, and the Association for Technology in Music Instruction. Barrick has performed professionally with nationally known acts such as the Omaha Symphony, Johnny Mathis, the Legends of Swing, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Sonny Turner and the Platters, The Crystals, The Coasters, Wayne Newton, Rick K and the All Nighters, the Harry James Orchestra, and The Temptations. He can be heard performing locally throughout the Ohio Valley with the Vince Villanova Big Band, the jazz duo Pair O’Docs, and with his own jazz quartet, The Chris Barrick Group.
Dr. Barrick’s research interests include saxophone repertoire, pedagogy, and jazz studies. His scholarship has been published in the North American Saxophone Alliance’s Saxophone Symposium. In 2009, Lambert Academic Press published his book on the saxophone repertoire of composer Elliot Del Borgo. Barrick has presented research at the 2012 International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest, the United States Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the national conference of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and at regional conferences of the College Music Society.
An experienced educator, Barrick has taught at two major universities and in the public schools of Tennessee. Prior to his appointment at West Liberty, he served as the Jazz Ensemble Director at Doane College (Crete, NE) and as a Teaching Assistant in Saxophone at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. An active adjudicator and clinician, Barrick has presented saxophone clinics at the United States Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium, regional conferences of the North American Saxophone Alliance and at the annual conference of the West Virginia Music Educators Association.
Originally from New Jersey, Dr. Barrick holds music degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (DMA), the University of Tennessee (MM) and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (BA and BS).
